Linen-flax is an eco-friendly crop
Biodegradable
- Cars, boats, planes made with natural fibers (door and roof panels, bumpers etc.) are not only lighter and stronger, but also recyclable.
- Flax shives used for gardening or animal bedding, will naturally disintegrate and dissolve into the soil; they could also be used as a mix for organic composts for fertilizing fields.
- Paperbags and disposable towels made with flax fiber could solve a part of the problem created by plastic bags and plastic disposables.
Human-Friendly
- Contrary to fiberglass or carbon fiber, natural fibers do not release in the air toxic fragments that could damage people’s health.
Light
- One fiber of flax = 2 micron, while a hair crack = 4 micron, which makes flax ideally fitted for isolation materials.
- Natural fibers are more efficient and 30% lighter than fiberglass, thus allowing important fuel savings while used for transportation applications.
Renewable
- Flax cultivation does not require irrigation and its deep-rooting system improves the soil quality for the next cultures.
- 1 ha of flax could give more volume of high quality wood than 1 ha of forest per year.
Carbon neutral
- Flax absorbs the same amount of carbon dioxide as it produces.
- During its processing, it generates only organic waste and its by-products can be used for the production of electricity or heating (pellets) or to make ecological housing material.
- Flax shives used as building material do fix the CO2 safely and indefinitely.
Not dependent on oil
- Contrary to fiberglass, whose production requires a lot of heating energy, and contrary to oil-based chemical fibers, naturally produced flax fibers are not depending neither on oil price nor on oil availability.
